About
I am Shania Sekhon, a Mental Health Counselor with my Limited Permit practicing in NY state. I am drawn towards working with young and middle-age adults in individual, group and couples therapy. I often work with those who are dealing with anxiety, relationship and family difficulties, self-esteem issues, depression, and trauma.
I also work in diagnostic evaluations and testing to provide clarity and guide treatment for clients who are looking for answers due to experiencing difficulty in various areas of their life. I engage in testing and assessments for disorders including, ADHD/ADD, ASD, personality disorders, anxiety and depression, as well as differential diagnoses.
My approach to therapy is rooted in my firm belief in the power of self-exploration through a collaborative approach. I aim to be warm, open-minded and inquisitive with my clients in order to establish an authentic connection where I can learn what has led each client to therapy and what they wish to happen next. My hope is that my clients will feel a shift towards self-acceptance and growth over the course of our time together. I strive for my clients to develop insight in which they are able to take what they learn about themselves in sessions and apply it to their life outside of therapy.
Within the therapeutic space, I integrate various approaches to accommodate the unique needs of each client. I most often operate from an Emotionally-Focused and Client-Centered approach as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Solution-Focused frameworks. Perhaps most important to my approach is that I value a multicultural perspective, recognizing the significant need for diversity in the counseling space. As a first-generation Indian American therapist, I am especially aware of the ways in which cultural beliefs and values influence the ways we lead our lives. With this knowledge, I am passionate about providing culturally competent care and a safe space for all marginalized communities.
I earned my Ed.M. in Mental Health Counseling and M.A in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University and my Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Psychology and Sociology from Rutgers University.
